Game Objective
Craps is based on the number 7, as this number
is the most frequent total made up by two dice. Craps (also known as Dice) is a
game that consists of a round of rolls and the initial throw of the dice is
called the come-out throw. On the come-out throw, if the total value of the two
dice equals 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12, the round immediately ends. If any other total is
thrown (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) that number is called the point.
Once a point has been made, the dice will
be thrown repeatedly until that same point is thrown again, or a 7. The object
of Craps is to establish the point and to then throw that same point again
before throwing a 7.
Although Craps may at first appear to be a
complicated and confusing game, it doesn't have to be. If you concentrate on the
most basic wagers, the game is actually fairly simple. As you get more
experienced you can add more bets to your "repertoire"!
There are two ways in which to play:
In order to make understanding the game as
simple as possible, the bets that go against the dice are described
in red. In order to get a natural flow of the game
from both perspectives, it is advisable to first learn the bets that play with
the dice (described in black).
Basic Bets
The following four types of bets all pay even money (1 to 1).
Pass Line Bets:
The Pass Line is the most fundamental bet in Craps and almost every player bets
on it.
This bet is made before the come-out
throw. If the come-out throw is a 7 or 11 you win, but lose if it is a 2, 3 or
12. If you throw 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 you establish the point. Once the point has
been established, in order to win, you must throw that same point again before
throwing a 7. If a 7 comes up before that point, you lose. Pass Line bets cannot
be removed once the point is established.
Don't Pass Bets:
With the exception of 12,the Don't Pass bet is exactly the opposite of a Pass
Line bet:
This bet is made before the come-out
throw. If the come-out throw is a 2 or 3 you win, but lose if it is a 7 or 11.
If a 12 is thrown it is a "push" and you neither win nor lose. If you
throw 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 you establish the point. Once the point has been made,
in order to win, you must throw a 7 before that same point. If the point comes
up before the 7, you lose. Don't Pass bets cannot be removed once the point is
established.
Come Bets:
Come bets effectively allow the player to make multiple pass line bets during
the same roll. The Come bet plays exactly like the Pass Line:
A bet must already be on the Pass Line. A
point must be thrown prior to placing this bet. Prior to the next throw, place
your bet on the space marked "Come" on the layout. The Come bet will
only stay on the Come area for one throw. If the come-out next throw is a 7 or
11 you win, but lose if it is a 2, 3 or 12.
If the come-out next throw is a point,
your bet will automatically be placed on the space with the corresponding number
to that of the point thrown. In order to win, you must throw that same point
again before throwing a 7. If a 7 comes up before the point, you lose. Come bets
cannot be removed once the point has been established.
Don't Come Bets:
Just as the Come bet allows multiple Pass Line bets, the Don't Come allows
multiple Don't Pass bets. With the exception of 12, the Don't Come bet is
exactly the opposite of a Come bet:
A bet must already be on the Don't Pass. A
point must be thrown prior to placing this bet. Prior to the next throw, place
your bet on the space marked "Don't Come" on the layout. The Don't
Come bet will only stay on the Don't Come area for one throw. If the come-out
next throw is a 2 or 3 you win, but lose if it is a 7 or 11. If a 12 is thrown
it is a "push" and you neither win nor lose.
If the come-out next throw is a point,
your bet will automatically be placed on the space with the corresponding number
to that of the point thrown. In order to win, you must throw a 7 before throwing
that same point. If the point comes up before the 7, you lose. Don't Come bets
cannot be removed once the point has been established.
Betting the Odds
The Odds bets are an additional wager to
your initial bet after the come-out throw and are a way of increasing your
initial bet by placing a further bet. You can bet up to three
times your initial wager. These bets are the best
bets you can make as they are paid off at the true odds of the number thrown
(i.e. no house edge) - all you are betting against is the straight dice.
In order to place an Odds bet, you must
first place a bet on the Pass/Don't Pass Line or Come/Don't come. Odds bets can
only be made if the first throw in the come-out throw is a point. Although the
Odds are not marked on the layout they are placed right beside your initial bet
on the Pass/Don't Pass Line (as described below). These bets can be removed at
any time.
Pass Line Odds Bets:
After the point has been established, you can supplement your Pass Line bet by
"taking" odds up to three times your initial bet. This bet is known as
"taking the odds" because the payout is something more than the amount
of the Odds bet wager. When you take Odds on a Pass Line bet, you are betting
that the point will be rolled before the 7. The payouts for throwing the point
before a 7 are:
Point Payout
4, 10 2 to 1
5, 9 3 to 2
6, 8 6 to 5
Don't Pass Odds Bets:
After the point has been established, you supplement your Don't Pass bet by
"laying" odds up to three times your initial bet. Laying the Odds is
the opposite of taking the Odds. When you lay Odds on a Don't Pass bet, you are
betting that a 7 will be rolled before the point. You are more likely to win
because there are more ways to throw a 7 than any other number; therefore you
have to wager more to win less. The payouts for throwing a 7 before the point
are:
Point Payout
4, 10 1 to 2
5, 9 2 to 3
6, 8 5 to 6
Come Odds Bets:
As with the Pass Line Odds bet, after the point has been established, you can
supplement your Come bet by "taking" odds up to three times your
initial bet. The payouts for throwing the point before a 7 are:
Point Payout
4, 10 2 to 1
5, 9 3 to 2
6, 8 6 to 5
Don't Come Odds Bets:
As with the Don't Pass Odds bet, after the point has been established, you
supplement your Don't Come bet by "laying" odds up to three times your
initial bet. The payouts for throwing a 7 before the point are:
Point Payout
4, 10 1 to 2
5, 9 2 to 3
6, 8 5 to 6
Field Bets:
These bets can be placed at anytime. You bet that the next throw will be a 2, 3,
4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 (the numbers that appear in the section of the table layout
marked "Field"). The payouts are:
Point Payout
2, 12 2 to 1
3, 4, 9, 10, 11 1 to 1
Big 6 Bets:
A Big 6 bet is that a 6 will be thrown before a 7. You win even money (1 to 1).
Bets lose if a 7 is thrown before a 6. These bets can be placed and removed at
any time.
Big 8 Bets:
A Big 8 bet is that an 8 will be thrown before a 7. You win even money (1 to 1).
Bets lose if a 7 is thrown before an 8. These bets can be placed and removed at
any time.
Place Bets:
When a player makes a Pass Line bet, the wager
is not made on a specific number. Place bets allow you to specifically bet any
point. With Place bets you do not need to have a Pass Line bet. These bets can
be removed at any time.
Place Win Bets:
You may bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. If the number you bet on is thrown before a
7, you win. The payouts are as follows:
Point Payout
4, 10 9 to 5
5, 9 7 to 5
6, 8 7 to 6
Place Lose Bets:
You will be laying rather than taking the odds. You may bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or
10. The Place Lose bet is opposite to the Place Win bet. You are betting that a
7 will be thrown before the number you bet on. Because 7 is the most likely
number to be thrown, you wager more than you win. The payouts are as follows:
Point Payout
4, 10 5 to 11
5, 9 5 to 8
6, 8 4 to 5
Buy Bets:
A Buy bet is a wager that the number that you bet on (4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10) will
be thrown before the 7. When a player buys a point, he is buying a true odds
payout. In order to receive the true odds payout rate, you must pay 5%
commission of the amount of the wager when the bet is made. The payouts are as
follows:
Point Payout
4, 10 2 to 1
5, 9 3 to 2
6, 8 6 to 5
Lay Bets:
You will be laying rather than taking the odds. You may bet on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or
10. The Lay bet is opposite of the Buy bet. You are betting that a 7 will be
thrown before the number you bet on. The commission charged on Lay bets is 5% of
the amount a winning Lay bet would pay. The commission is charged when the bet
is made. Because the 7 is the most likely number to be thrown you wager more
than you win. The payouts are as follows:
Point Payout
4, 10 1 to 2
5, 9 2 to 3
6, 8 4 to 5
Centre Action
These are one roll bets and are placed in the centre of the table layout (the
area displaying numerous dice graphics). You are betting that the next throw
will be any one of the numbers described below. One roll bets either win or lose
on the next throw and can be placed at anytime. Although the payouts are high,
these bets have the highest house edge.
Any 7, 11 or Craps Bets:
The payouts for throwing one of the following numbers are:
Number Payout
7 4 to 1
11 15 to 1
Any craps (2, 3 or 12) 7 to 1
Horn Bets:
The payouts for throwing the following numbers are:
Horn Payout
3, 11 15 to 1
2, 12 30 to 1
Hardways
The player can bet any or all of the individual Hardway bets. For example, with
two dice a four can be thrown as a 3-1, 1-3 or 2-2. This bet is called a Hardway
because it is harder to throw two dice as a 2-2 than as a 1-3 or 3-1. These bets
can be placed and removed at any time.
Hardway 4:
If you throw a hard 4 (2-2) you win 7 to 1, but lose on 7 and a soft 4 (3-1).
These bets can be removed anytime.
Hardway 6:
If you throw a hard 6 (3-3) you win 9 to 1, but lose on 7 and a soft 6 (5-1,
4-2). These bets can be removed anytime.
Hardway 8:
If you throw a hard 8 (4-4) you win 9 to 1, but lose on 7 and a soft 8 (6-2,
5-3). These bets can be removed anytime.
Hardway 10:
If you throw a hard 10 (5-5) you win 7 to 1, but lose on 7 and a soft 10 (6-4).
These bets can be removed anytime.
